Let Him Eat Cake

Cian made a cake with his grandmother on Tuesday. He took it to the Cub Scouts pack meeting Tuesday night. He entered it into the cake contest and auction.

It didn't win. But it was crazy. There were animatronic cakes. I mean, the cake had a frankenstein monster that lifted its own head up off its body, then put it back down. There were spider-cakes, graveyard cakes, snake cakes, all sorts of stuff.

So the bidding began, and Cian's cake was early in the process. Nobody bid on it. I wanted to let Cian do it so I didn't interfere. I had given Cian $6 to buy his cake, which wasn't much by these scouts standards. But, Cian bought the second or third cake offered for $2. It was the cheapest one sold. After that cake they only started the auction at $5.

So the auction took off and cakes sold for as much as $22. Finally after 45 minutes it wound down and the last cub scout had bought a cake. But there were some spares. So they called free-for-all on the last cakes and I let Cian go up. He had $4 left.

Cian's Scout leader Melinda came by, said "I budgeted $20 for Aaron's cake and he only used $18. Here Cian, use the rest", and gave him $2. So Cian went up to the auction line and started bidding.

Suddenly I realized he was bidding $9. I told him "No... Cian you only have $6!", but he comes over to me and shows me a $20. The auctioneer had given him a twenty (with the presumption he was about to buy the cake and give him the twenty back). So Cian collaborated with the auctioneer to buy his own cake, and he bid it up to $26.

Bottom line... Cian bought the cheapest cake and the most expensive cake offered! And... he and his grandma made the most expensive cake at the auction! That has got to be a measure of its worth, right?
